BLACK TEA A TONIC FOR HYPERTENSION


We know that drinking green tea each day can help reduce our hypertension. Green tea is not, however, to everyone’s taste. Can black tea help lower our high blood pressure?

WHAT ARE THE NEW FINDINGS?

There is already mounting evidence that tea is good for your heart health and the research has demonstrated a link between tea and reducing a major risk factor for heart disease.
This recent research is the first time that the consumption of black tea has been shown to lower rates of blood pressure variation at night-time.

THE RESEARCH

A high blood pressure reading is one that exceeds 140/90 millimeter of mercury (mm Hg).
The first figure, the systolic pressure, corresponds to the “surge” that occurs with each heartbeat. The lower figure is when our heart is resting between beats.
In the research study 111 men and women consumed three cups of black tea daily or a flavored free, caffeine containing beverage for six months. They all had hypertension and their systolic blood pressures were between 115 and 150 mm Hg.
The rate of blood pressure variation was assessed at three time-points, on day one and after three and six months.
At these three time-points, black tea consumption resulted in 10 per cent lower rates of hypertension variability at night-time than the flavored free drink.
These effects were seen immediately on the first day of tea drinking and maintained over the six months.
Although black tea was drunk in the study, other research suggests adding milk does not affect the benefits.
Drinking tea is a convenient, refreshing way to help lower your high blood pressure. What this study demonstrates is that drinking black tea helps reduce the variability of our hypertension at night-time. What better reason is there than that for a bedtime cup of Rosy Lea?

REDUCING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE NATURALLY WITH HIBISCUS TEA


You have hypertension don’t you?” That was how my daughter greeted me on her return from a vacation in Egypt. “Yes I do” I replied. “I thought so. I have brought you a practical gift from Egypt. It is a tea. They use it to lower blood pressure.” She said. That was my introduction to hibiscus tea.

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa),also known as Roselle, has been used to treat hypertension in both African and Asian traditional medicine.

it has diuretic properties
it opens the arteries, and
it acts as a natural angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, which means it slows the release of hormones that constrict blood vessels.
In addition, hibiscus boosts immune function and provides valuable antioxidants. Hibiscus is safe and, unlike most hypertension drugs, rarely causes side effects.

HOW TO MAKE HIBISCUS TEA

This was the question I had as I looked at the bag of dried flowers I had received from my daughter. There were no instructions.
My first attempt produced a deep ruby coloured liquor, but it was far too strong for my taste. After several more attempts, I found a strength that was to my taste.
Hibiscus tea is made by steeping from 1 to 5 teaspoons, according to taste, of dried “flowers” (technically, the calyxes surrounding the flowers) per cup in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes.
You can also use your home digital BP monitor to see which strength of hibiscus tea has the most beneficial effect for you. Take your readings before different strengths and retest an hour later to see what works best for you.
Check with your doctor prior to taking hibiscus if you’re currently on medication to reduce hypertension, as often a combination of an herb and a lower dose of a pharmaceutical provides the same benefit as a higher dose of the drug.

Fruits to Help Lower Blood Pressure



The high potassium and low sodium in some fruits can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Selection of right fruits can keep your blood pressure under control.



A systolic pressure (top reading) of 140 or more and/or a diastolic pressure (bottom reading) of 90 or more indicate that you have high blood pressure. The good news is you that don’t always have to go for prescription medicine to lower your blood pressure.
Trying lifestyle changes can suit you if you have borderline or moderate hypertension. However do consult your doctor, he or she will check your pressure and inform you if these changes can substitute or lower the medication dose for your hypertension. The recommended changes includes:

 Watch your waistline. Shed that extra flab.

 Exercise regularly. Even moderate physical activity such as brisk walking and bicycling or gardening can help control your blood pressure.

Potassium is a very important mineral for the proper functioning of all cells of our body. Along with sodium, calcium and magnesium, potassium helps maintain the electrolyte balance of the body. Too much salt or sodium causes water retention in the body. This increases the blood volume and puts pressure on the artery walls resulting in high blood pressure.

Again, low potassium levels and high sodium levels, makes the heart and blood vessels to work harder and therefore increase pressure on the walls. So, keeping the right sodium–potassium balance is important for proper functioning of the body. Increasing the dietary consumption of potassium can help lower blood pressure.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet to lower high blood pressure. The DASH diet plan is high in fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products. It is also high in potassium, calcium and magnesium which are useful in controlling high blood pressure.

Data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) indicated that higher dietary potassium intakes were associated with significantly lower blood pressures. The DASH trial provided further support for the beneficial effects of a potassium-rich diet on blood pressure. According to them, consumption of a diet including 8.5 servings/day of fruits and vegetables and 4,100 mg/day of potassium lowered blood pressure by an average of 2.8 /1.1 mm Hg (systolic BP/diastolic BP) in people with normal blood pressure and by an average of 7.2 /2.8 mm Hg in people with hypertension. Increasing dietary calcium intake by 800 mg/day in the DASH trial lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure still further.

Since fruits contain many essential nutrients, vitamins and anti-oxidants besides potassium, it is one of the best types of food that can help lower your blood pressure. Here are some fruits that are high in potassium content and which help lower blood pressure.
Apricot: Apricot is a very good source of potassium and vitamin A. With 2202 mg (63 percent DV) of potassium in a cup (119 g of cubes) of dehydrated apricot, it is perhaps one of the best foods that have potassium in them. It is very low in sodium content as well as saturated fat and cholesterol.

Avocado: Avocado is rich in assortment of vitamins and high in monounsaturated fat and potassium. It contains a unique fatty alcohol, called avocadene, which has a curative property for a number of ailments including high blood pressure. One cup (150 g of cubes) contains 727 mg of potassium (21 percent of the daily recommended value for potassium) and only 10.5 mg of sodium (zero percent of the daily recommended value [DV]). Avocado is very low in cholesterol and it is a good source of dietary fiber.

Banana: Bananais a versatile fruit – eat a whole banana as a snack or add sliced banana to your morning cereal or make a fruit salad with banana as one of the ingredients. Whatever way you eat it, a medium sized banana will provide 422 mg of potassium and 17 percent of the daily recommended value for vitamin C. With 2.83 g of dietary fiber, this fruit will help you stay full for longer periods of time.

Cantaloupe: Cantaloupe is a fruit that belongs to the melon family. It is an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C. A cup of cubed cantaloupe (160 g) contains 494.5 mg of potassium 14.1 percent daily recommended value for potassium. Remember to wash the outside of the cantaloupe before cutting it since bacteria can grow on its surface. Refrigerate if you are not going to consume it immediately.

Oranges and Lemons: Citrus fruits are best known for their high vitamin C content. Oranges are high in nutrition and low in calories. With a potassium content of 326 mg and no sodium, this is one of the best fruits that lower blood pressure. Limes, too, are a good source of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A and folate. They contain 2.8 g of dietary fiber.

Grapefruit: This fruit has a distinctive, tangy taste. Select ripe grapefruits for best flavor and quality. The bioflavonoids present in grapefruit and other citrus fruits not only help lower blood pressure but also help lower cholesterol levels. Half a grapefruit (123 g) contains 166 mg of potassium and provides 5 percent of daily recommended value for potassium.

Melons: Melon is a very good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, thiamin and potassium. One cup of frozen melon balls (173 g) 484 mg of potassium and provides 14 percent of daily recommended value for potassium. It is also a good source of magnesium, folate and vitamin B6.

Prune: Prunes are actually the dried version of European plums. They are sweet in taste and have a sticky chewy texture. One cup of pitted prunes (174 g) contains 1274 mg of potassium and almost no sodium. Moreover, prune is a rich source of dietary fiber. A quarter cup of prunes supply 12.1 percent of the daily value for fiber. The soluble fiber promotes a sense of satisfied fullness after a meal as it slows down the digestive process and thus helps with weight loss. So if you have high blood pressure and are overweight too, prunes may be the right fruit for you.

In addition to these fruits, you can also eat raisins, dates, figs and molasses. They too contain a high amount of potassium. According to the NIH, dried fruits normally contain more potassium than fresh versions.

Fruits Help you Save Calories

If you are obese or overweight and have high blood pressure, substituting some cereals or protein food can help you save calories. For example:

 Eating a medium sized apple instead of four shortbread cookies can save you 80 calories.

 Eating one-fourth cup of dried apricots instead of a 2-ounce bag of pork rinds can save you 230 calories.

Tips to Eating Fruits

 Potassium leaches out into the water during cooking. So the best way to get potassium is through fruits.

 Keep the fruit out on the counter or in the front of the fridge. That way you’ll be more likely to notice it and eat it.

 Choose color and variety in fruits. Go for yellow, green, orange and red fruits.

 Fruits salads are an interesting way to eat fruits.

 Get some fruits at snack time too.

 Go for variety in fruits. Try some new fruits.

 Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure. And fruits are a great source of potassium.


LOWER YOUR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE BY EATING SALAD

New research by King’s College in London suggests that tossing your salad lettuce in olive oil and adding a sprinkling of nuts and avocado boosts heart health and lowers your blood pressure. The addition of unsaturated fat in olive oil makes salad leaves particularly healthy. How does it work?

The chemistry of cooking

The reasoning behind the finding put me in mind of the late celebrity TV chef, Philip Harben. Harben went beyond demonstrating his recipes and explained to his television audience why it was that they worked. He explained the chemistry of cooking.

When foods are eaten together a chemical reaction occurs in stomach. William Hay, the inventor of food combining in the 1920′s, understood this and used it as the basis of his dietary program.

The addition of unsaturated fat in olive oil causes salad leaves to make compounds called nitro fatty acids which react in the stomach with an enzyme to lower our high blood pressure.

There are two essential ingredients for the chemical reaction to occur. They are:

1,Unsaturated fats
2,Unsaturated fats are found in::

olive oil;

nuts such as walnuts, almonds, cashew, hazelnuts, macadamia and pecans;
avocados; and oily fish such as salmon, trout, mackerel, fresh tuna, herring, pilchards, swordfish and sardines.
Compounds called nitrites and nitrates

Nitrites are found in high levels in many salad vegetables including:

lettuce;
spinach;
celery;
carrots; and
beetroot.
Beetroot juice

A study into the beneficial effects of drinking beetroot juice also concluded that it was the nitro fatty acids reacting in the stomach with an enzyme that helped to reduce hypertension.

Mediterranean diet

The King’s College study could help explain why the so-called Mediterranean diet is good for the heart, despite followers eating large amounts of olive oil and other fats. It also helps to explain why previous research has shown that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, or nuts can reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems like stroke, heart failure and heart attacks.
Balanced diet and hypertension
Most dietary advice for those of us with hypertension focuses on having a healthy balanced diet containing a variety of fruits and vegetables.
The basis of this advice is that it ensures we get all the vitamins and minerals our bodies need together with adequate amounts of dietary fibre necessary to keep or bodies functioning properly.

The King’s College study and the study into beetroot juice, amongst other research, as well as the Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension (DASH Diet) not only confirm that having a healthy balanced diet is essential to lowering high blood pressure, but like Philp Harben all those years ago, it is explaining the chemistry of why it reduces our hypertension.

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or hypertension, your doctor probably suggested a diet plan to help lower your blood pressure.

Millions of Americans have hypertension and don’t even know it. Having this condition greatly increases your risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke and many other diseases. It is very important to have regular checkups with a physician so that conditions like blood pressure that is too high, high sugar levels and other common conditions can be caught early and before they cause long term damage.

Lose Weight

Managing your diet is one way to help drop your hypertension numbers. This condition is usually a side effect of how you eat and how much (or little) exercise you get every day. If you are overweight, simply changing your diet and losing weight will improve your blood pressure. Typically, the more weight you lose, the lower your blood pressure will be. I started off on a higher dosage of medication and it had to be lowered when I lost 25 pounds.

Start Exercising

Get up and get moving! Not only will you feel better, doing 30-60 minutes of exercise every day can significantly lower your blood pressure, especially if you stick to a heart healthy diet plan. If you are pressed for time, you don’t have to do the full 30 minutes at one time. Splitting it into three ten minute brisk walks will also work. Before you start any exercise plan, consult with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough for the exercise plan you intent to follow.

Pick A Healthy Diet Plan

Losing weight is great but there is more than one way to lose weight and not all of them are healthy or will help lower your blood pressure. You specifically need to stick to a food plan that has whole grains, fruits, vegetable and low fat dairy products. Cutting or drastically reducing your intake of saturate fat, salt and cholesterol can also great lower your blood pressure.

Tips To Eat Healthy

But, all of these things are easier said than done. After all, if you had been eating properly and exercising, chances are you would n’t have high blood pressure now.

Make small changes at first. For example, cut out sodas and chips the first week. Then pick something else the second week and start substituting healthy things instead. Do not make this an all or nothing deal because you will fail.

Write down everything you eat. This is how I managed to lose 30 pounds and keep it off. I used My Fitness Pal to keep track of everything I ate. Even on days when I cheated, I still knew how bad I had been and I was able to get back on track more easily. It really does n’t matter how you keep track of your food intake as long as you log everything you eat and drink.

Make A Meal Plan. I have personally found that if I plan my meals and snacks for the week, I stick to the diet plan much better. I work and it is just too easy to run through a drive through and completely ruin my eating for the day which can cause my blood pressure to shoot up. I make a list, hang it on my fridge, package up what I can on Sunday and label everything. I try to only go to the grocery once a week and I buy what is on my list that I plan to eat for the week. This reduces temptation and makes it a snap to eat right when I am tired at the end of the day.

GUIDELINES TO REDUCE SODIUM IN YOUR DIET

Ponichtera suggests making a gradual transition to using less salt and sodium-reduced products, particularly if you and your family is accustomed to sodium’s distinctive taste.
The best ways to cut back on sodium are to not use salt at the table, use less salt in cooking and avoid processed foods. Ponichtera says, “Keep in mind that a small amount [of salt] used in cooking may give just enough flavor to help you from adding too much at the table.” There is no reason to over-salt.

HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

1. Fresh is best. Use fresh foods in place of processed foods. Fresh foods actually taste like they are meant to taste. Processed foods often just taste like salt.

2. Opt for frozen. Buy frozen vegetables instead of canned. Most unseasoned frozen veggies have no salt added.

3. Be choosy if buying canned foods. When you buy canned goods, choose the varieties with no salt added or labeled with lower-sodium.

4. Rinse canned beans and vegetables. To reduce the amount of salt in canned beans and vegetables, rinse them in a colander with water.

5. Cut the cured meats. Deli meats, ham and bacon are loaded with sodium. If using, simply add small portions to your meal. Small amounts can still add a lot of flavor.

6. Lower-sodium products. Try some of the lower-sodium products, such as reduced-salt ham or bacon. Even though many lower-sodium foods still contain a high amount of sodium, they still have less than the original products.

7. Salt-free soups. Use salt-free or reduced-salt soups, broth and bouillon. Canned soups are notorious for high sodium levels.

8. Go light on condiments. Loaded with flavor, condiments are also loaded with salt. Use ketchup, mustard and sauces sparingly.

9. Use vinegar or citrus for flavor. Sprinkle vinegar or squeeze lemon or lime juice on fish, chicken or vegetables.

10. Pass on the seasoning salt. Use seasoning powders instead of salts. For example, substitute garlic powder for garlic salt.

11. Generously include herbs and spices in your recipes. Fresh or dried, herbs and spices are not a significant source of sodium. (Give these seven super spices a try.)

12. Try unsalted snack foods. For a change, eat unsalted baked chips, popcorn and whole grain crackers. Pair them with dynamite dips and you won’t miss the salt at all.

13. Reduce the sodium in fast food. When ordering fast food items, forgo the pickles and cheese. You can even order French fries without the salt.

Chemically, electrolytes are substances that become ions in a solution and acquire the capacity to conduct electricity. Electrolyte balance in our bodies is essential for normal function of our cells and our organs. Common electrolytes that are crucial to bodily functions include sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. Potassium is one of the major positive ion (cation) found inside of cells.

Potassium is very important in cellular biochemical reactions and energy metabolism; it participates in the synthesis of protein from amino acids in the cell. Along with sodium, it regulates the water balance and the acid-base balance in the blood and tissues. Potassium also functions in carbohydrate metabolism; it is active in glycogen and glucose metabolism, converting glucose to glycogen that gets stored in the liver for future energy. Potassium is important for normal growth and for building muscle. Potassium keeps the heart beating regularly, helps the nerves send messages and muscles work properly.

Potassium and sodium work together to regulate the water and acid-base balance in the blood and tissues. Potassium enters the cell more readily than sodium and instigates the brief sodium-potassium exchange across the cell membranes. It also works by creating a sodium-potassium pump that helps generate muscle contractions, including regulating heartbeat. The sodium-potassium pump works by pumping two potassium ions into the cell and pumping out three sodium ions. In other words, potassium facilitates the pumping of sodium outside the cell. If sodium is not pumped out, water accumulates within the cell causing it to swell. This is one of the major root causes for hypertension. In the nerve cells, this sodium-potassium flux generates the electrical potential that aids nerve impulses conduction. When potassium leaves the cell, it changes the membrane potential and allows the nerve impulse to progress. This electrical potential gradient, created by the sodium-potassium pump helps generate muscle contractions and regulates the heartbeat.

Because of these reasons, reducing the intake of sodium by in itself is not enough for controlling the blood pressure in people who are salt sensitive; adequate amount of potassium is also crucial. Infusions of potassium would cause an increase in blood flow due to arteries dilation and relaxation of smooth muscles. Potassium also activates nitric oxide and thus reduces pressure in the arteries, lowering the risk of hypertension.

Though sodium is readily conserved by the body, there is no effective method for potassium conservation. Even when a potassium shortage exists, the kidneys continue to excrete it. Because the human body relies on potassium balance for a regularly contracting heart and a healthy nervous system, it is essential to strive for this electrolyte’s balance. Most adults need about 4,700 milligrams of potassium a day. In general, people who consume enough potassium tend to have lower blood pressure than those who don’t. And even though high potassium levels lead to healthy blood pressure, there’s no proof that taking supplements will make any difference.

Potassium is found in red blood cells, muscles and bones. With a balanced diet of whole foods, you’ll likely get all the potassium you need. Baked potatoes are excellent sources – a small one, including the skin, has 738 milligrams. A serving of plain, non-fat yogurt has 579 milligrams; a medium, baked sweet potato with skin has 542 milligrams; and 1/2 cup of cooked soybeans has 485 milligrams of potassium. Bananas, well-known as a potassium source, have about 422 milligrams per medium-sized fruit. Another fruit that is a power house of potassium is the small but mighty kiwi fruit. This furry little egg-shaped fruit has almost as much potassium as a banana for only half the calories. Three fourth cup of unsalted pistachios can give about 1000 milligrams of potassium.

A higher sodium-potassium ratio could notably increase the risk of cardio vascular diseases. Piling on the potassium affects your arteries where it counts, deep down in the inner linings of the arterial wall. The endothelial cells serve as the control center for producing nitric oxide, the calming chemical that relaxes the vessels. Changing the potassium to sodium ratio by bumping up your potassium levels is like taking a water pill; it releases extra fluids and sodium through the urine, thereby lowering the pressure on your artery walls. Thanks to the packaged food culture, we get far more sodium in our diet than potassium. If your diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, you likely take in lots of potassium. Potassium-containing foods are generally considered healthy. If you have trouble getting enough potassium in your daily diet or take medications such as diuretics that cause you to lose extra potassium, a supplement becomes necessary. Whenever possible, consuming potassium food sources is likely the preferred option for taking in this mineral in your daily diet. To make matters worse, not only does the processing of foods like tomatoes and potatoes rise sodium level precipitously, but the natural potassium in these foods declines significantly, worsening the sodium-potassium ratio.

If you’re like most Americans, you get far more sodium in your diet than potassium even though your body actually needs smaller amounts of the salty stuff, because of the excessive presence of processed foods in typical Western diet, which tend to have far more sodium than natural fare. Insufficient potassium intake may result in a host of chronic diseases such as osteoporosis and high blood pressure, and may increase your risk of stroke later in life. Low potassium levels are also linked to increased urinary calcium excretion, promoting painful kidney stones.

Potassium is truly your blood vessels’ best friend. Get enough of it in your day by eating fresh fruits and unprocessed whole foods. This can significantly cut your blood pressure numbers and protect your heart. Understand the interplay of sodium and potassium in the diet is the critical factor. To prevent, treat, and reverse high blood pressure, you must make a concerted effort to shake the sodium and power up the potassium – a goal that requires perseverance in a world where the food supply is increasingly processed.


HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR ADDING POTASSIUM INTO YOUR DIET:

Snack on salt-free pistachios
Add spinach to your omelet

Daily eat 1 banana, 2 kiwis, 10 ounces of spinach, 2 cups of non-fat yogurt, a can of low sodium vegetable juice.

Use avocado as sandwich spread instead of mayonnaise.

Fill your fruit bowl with oranges, bananas, kiwis and cantaloupes and snack them throughout the day.
Order unseasoned grilled salmon and baked potatoes (salt-free) at restaurants.

POTASSIUM BENEFITS INCLUDE LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE

Maybe it’s my competitive nature, but there’s nothing like being able to say, “I told you so.” And in the 20 years that I’ve been writing Health & Healing, I’ve had several opportunities to do just that.
In the example below, I told readers about how the mineral potassium benefits blood pressure. And I wrote this story two years before The New York Times ran a similar article. Here is the copy that appeared in the June 1999 issue. (The core concept of this story remains unchanged; however, my recommendations have been updated to reflect the most recent science and what’s working here at the Whitaker Wellness Institute.)

LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE WITH THE “K FACTOR”

“A banana a day keeps the doctor away.”
Everybody knows that regular consumption of apples is good for your health, but bananas? Well, according to a recent study, eating bananas may bring down your blood pressure.
In this study, carried out at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India, people who ate two bananas daily for one week had a 10 percent drop in their blood pressure levels. It has been suggested that bananas may contain compounds similar to ACE inhibitors (another class of drugs that conventional doctors often prescribe to lower blood pressure). But even more important, bananas are an exceptionally rich source of potassium.

POTASSIUM BENEFITS INCLUDE FEWER STROKES, HEART AND KIDNEY PROBLEMS

Potassium plays a key role in balancing levels of sodium and other important minerals that are linked to high blood pressure.
Richard D. Moore, M.D., Ph.D., has studied the potassium-hypertension connection for many years and is a leading expert on the subject. In his excellent book, The High Blood Pressure Solution: Natural Prevention and Cure with the K Factor (“K” is the chemical symbol for potassium), Dr. Moore demonstrates how eating according to the “K Factor”—defined as a sodium-to-potassium ratio of at least 1 to 4—can protect against hypertension, crippling strokes and premature death.

Eating foods high in potassium and low in sodium can also help prevent kidney disease and heart problems caused by hypertension. Furthermore, potassium benefits your health by reducing risk of stroke and premature death—even if blood pressure doesn’t fall.
In a 1998 study conducted by Dr. Alberto Ascherio at Harvard Medical School, 43,738 men, aged 40 to 75, were followed for eight years, during which time there were 328 documented strokes in the group. Dr. Ascherio and his colleagues found that the men with hypertension were 2.8 times as likely to have a stroke as those with normal blood pressure—an expected finding.

However, they also discovered that a high intake of potassium protected men from stroke—those with the lowest consumption of potassium (2.4 g per day) had a significantly increased risk of stroke when compared to men with the highest potassium intake (4.3 g). In a similar study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that an average daily increase of only 390 mg of potassium decreased the risk of stroke by 40 percent over 12 years, regardless of blood pressure.

INCREASE YOUR POTASSIUM BENEFITS WITH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Folks, this concept isn’t new. In 1904, in a medical history published in the Archives of General Medicine, patients with hypertension successfully lowered their blood pressure levels simply by increasing their consumption of potassium-rich foods while reducing their use of table salt. Yet despite numerous clinical trials since then which have shown the benefits of potassium, conventional physicians stubbornly continue to focus on sodium alone.
The easiest way to enjoy the potassium benefits is to eat lots of vegetables, legumes, whole grains and fruit. These wholesome foods naturally have an excellent sodium-to-potassium ratio of at least 1:50—and many fruits, such as bananas (1:440) and oranges (1:260), are much higher.
By replacing processed foods, restaurant fare and other high-salt foods with plant foods, you can bring your blood pressure under control and improve your overall health—without resorting to diuretics and other drugs that further deplete your body of potassium and other essential minerals.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Reduce your intake of processed/restaurant foods. These items are notoriously high in sodium. For instance, one Big Mac has 1,070 mg of sodium and a one-cup serving of regular canned soup contains approximately 800 mg.
Eat a sodium-to-potassium ratio of at least 1 to 4. You’ll need to read nutritional labels for this step. Let’s say you eat that Big Mac (not that I’m recommending this option) that has around 1,000 mg of sodium. You’d need to eat 4,000 mg of potassium to keep your ratios balanced.
Eat more potassium-rich foods. A better idea is to consume foods that are good sources of potassium. Some good examples include a tomato (444 mg) and avocado (680 mg) salad, 3 ounces of chicken (350 mg), a potato (782 mg), an apple (182 mg), and a banana (440 mg).
Use a potassium-salt combo in place of regular table salt. We’ve been doing this at the Whitaker Wellness Institute for years. In place of regular salt, we mix three parts potassium chloride (Nu-Salt or Morton’s Salt Substitute) with one part sodium chloride (table salt). (Potassium chloride by itself has a metallic taste to some people. However, with this mixture–which provides a substantial amount of potassium–few people can tell the difference.)
Incorporate healthy habits, such as a regular exercise program, 12 eight-ounce glasses of water per day (build up to this gradually and consult with your doctor if you have kidney problems or congestive heart failure), techniques to manage stress, and a comprehensive high-dose vitamin and mineral regimen.

POTASSIUM IS KEY FOR HEALTHY BLOOD PRESSURE

Science shows the clear link between low potassium and elevated blood pressure. One example comes from a Texas heart study. Researchers collected urine samples from 3,300 people. The results demonstrated that the lower the potassium1 in the urine (meaning less potassium in the diet) the higher the blood pressure. Quite interestingly, the findings were stronger than the link between salt and blood pressure. African-Americans, who comprised half the study participants, eat less fresh fruit and vegetables and consequently had the highest blood pressure. Researchers estimate that the processed food in America has reduced potassium2 intake to 1/3 of what it should be, setting the stage for cardiovascular disease.

I would like to focus for a moment on the low-sodium propaganda that has been pushed so heavily on those with high blood pressure. Current science indicates that 1/3 of individuals with normal blood pressure and ½ of individuals with high blood pressure have some degree of salt sensitivity. The new research also indicates that a likely cause of this salt sensitivity is a lack of potassium.

The fact that the myopic public health “experts” in the cardiovascular field are obsessed with making sure our population restricts sodium is not sound advice and certainly does not apply to everyone. Sodium is needed by the adrenal glands to help with energy, by the stomach to assist with digestion, and by every cell in your body. The more you sweat the more sodium you need, especially in hot weather. If your kidneys are normal you can easily handle huge fluctuations in sodium intake, and can process up to 20,000 mgs of dietary salt per day (not that I’m suggesting you eat that much). If you run low on salt your body’s energy systems will be compromised.

Some rather alarming studies in the past year have demonstrated that having low sodium was linked to increased cardiovascular problems and increased mortality. One study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania showed that in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension4 (PAH)—chronically high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs—those with the lowest sodium had a tenfold risk of death. PAH is a syndrome marked by narrowing of the arteries in the lungs. Thus, the right ventricle of the heart has to work increasingly hard to pump blood into the lungs for reoxygenation. The ability of the right ventricle to adapt to this increased workload is the single most important determinant of survival in these patients; low sodium makes their hearts unable to keep up with this energetic demand.

Even more surprising findings came from research done at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine5. Analyzing the diet histories of 8,700 Americans over many years researchers found that those who reported consuming the lowest amount of sodium were 80 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease compared to 1/4 of those in the sample group consuming the highest level of sodium. The risk for death from any cause appeared 24 percent greater for those consuming lower salt, but this latter difference was not quite large enough to dismiss the role of chance. The researchers concluded by stating: “Our findings suggest that for the general adult population, higher sodium is very unlikely to be independently associated with higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease or all other causes of death…Our findings do again raise questions about the usefulness or even safety of universal recommendations for low salt diets for all individuals, regardless of their blood pressure status or other health characteristics.”

It is quite obvious that increasing potassium, not lowering sodium, is an important basic for healthy blood pressure. In addition to the blood pressure issue, other signs of a lack of potassium include fatigue, muscle weakness, fluid retention, heart arrhythmia or jittery heart feeling, increased feeling of anxiety, and skin problems (including acne). Low potassium is a primary factor in the development of kidney stones. Prolonged deficiency6 leads to glucose intolerance and risk for type 2 diabetes. Long term potassium deficiency increases the risk for and onset of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and mental decline.

Getting adequate potassium in your diet is a simple health basic that just can’t be ignored. High potassium foods include fruits such as bananas, citrus fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Dietary supplements with potassium are limited to 99 mg a capsule, but offer some advantages when high quality forms of potassium are used that readily transport to your cells. If you have any of the symptoms on the above list you should increase your dietary and/or supplemental intake of potassium to see how much it helps.

Potassium’s best friend is magnesium, and both minerals are vital for healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular well-being.

The management and control of high blood pressure involves two major options, lifestyle modification and medication.

LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS TO MANAGE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

WEIGHT CONTROL

Aim for a healthy weight range for your height and body type. Your health care practitioner can help you calculate a healthy target weight.
Even a small amount of weight loss can make a major difference in lowering or preventing high blood pressure.

You must burn more calories than you take in to lose weight.

Crash or fad diets are not helpful and may be dangerous.

Some weight loss medications also carry major risks and may even elevate blood pressure, and great caution is advised in using these drugs. Please ask your health care practitioner or pharmacist for help in deciding if a weight loss medication is appropriate for your situation.

EXERCISE OR INCREASE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Physical activity reduces total cholesterol and bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein or LDL) and raises the good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein or HDL).

Both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the U.S. Surgeon General recommend 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.

Physical activity includes many daily activities such as cleaning the house, raking the lawn, and walking. Other possible sources of activity can include using the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator, walking for errands instead of driving a car, and participating in a sport or social activity such dancing.

OTHER THERAPY

Alternative therapies may be helpful to people trying to control their blood pressure.

Acupuncture and biofeedback are well-accepted alternative techniques that may help some people with high blood pressure.

Techniques that induce relaxation and reduce stress are recommended. These include meditation, yoga, and relaxation training.

These techniques alone may not control high blood pressure for many people. They should not be used as a substitute for medical therapy without first consulting with your health care practitioner.

Dietary supplements and alternative medications and therapies are sometimes recommended for high blood pressure.

Examples include vitamins, garlic, fish oil, L-arginine, soy, coenzyme Q10, herbs, phytosterols, and chelation therapy.
While these substances may be beneficial, the exact nature of their benefits is not known.

Scientific studies have produced no evidence that these therapies lower blood pressure or prevent the complications of high blood pressure.

Most of these substances are harmless if taken in moderate doses. Most people can take them without problems.

Talk to your health care practitioner if you are considering any of these treatments. Substituting these therapies for medical therapies that have been shown to lower blood pressure and the risk of complications may have a harmful effect on your health
