Cucumber varieties

There are several cucumber varieties available to the backyard vegetable gardener. Some are tried and true standards, others are more exotic.

This is a list of varieties or cultivators of cucumber, a widely cultivated vine in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. The cucumber vine bears edible fruit.

Varieties

Aardvark Cucumber
The aardvark cucumber (Cucumis humifructus), also known as aardvark pumpkin, is a kind of cucumber from southern Africa which fruits underground. It is reliant on the aardvark to eat the fruit in order to spread and re-bury the seeds of the plant.

Babylon
Babylon is a Mediterranean type slicing cucumber that produces smooth, slightly ribbed cylindrical fruit. Pick small (4-5" in length) for optimal flavor and texture. Babylon is unbelievably sweet and crunchy, thin-skinned and has tiny white spines. The seeds and seed cavity are small as compared to a standard slicing type. 

Bella
Elongated, slender fruits with a crisp texture and the sweet, refreshing flavor of summer. Plants produce absolutely bitter-free cucumbers and even when they get 8 inches long, they remain a slim 3/4 inch wide. Wonderful for fresh eating or cucumber salads. Also performed well in our outdoor trials.

Burpless 26
This straight cucumber grows up to 12 inches long, sporting a deep dark green skin with a squeaky-smooth surface. Also known as a "slicing cucumber", this fruit is great for a myriad of applications from pickling to simly slicing and incorperating into a salad.

Burpless Tasty Green
This is a space-saving form of the favorite Burpless Hybrid. Short vines grow about 2 feet long — long enough to trellis if desired. Fruit is straight and cylindrical for easy slicing. Eat these delicious cukes fresh, pickled, or sliced into salads. Excellent for small gardens and containers.
